Argostoli
- Skala - Poros
Setting off from the capital of the island, with northeast direction,
in a distance of 8 km, we come across the village of Travliata,
which stands under the fortress of Ag.Georgios and it is the gate
of the fertile plain of Livathous. Then follows the villages of
Peratata and Karavado with the beautiful beach of Ag.Thoma.
A little further down, the villages Mousata and Vlahata, with the
sandy beach of Trapezaki, offer the visitor a panoramic view of
the immense plain and of the deep blue sea. Turning right and in
a distance of 1 km we come across the picturesque coastline village
of Lourdata with affluent crystal running waters, which gush from
Enos mountain and gives life to the plain.

In order to swim, you should try the beach of the village
with length of 2.5 km, combining the marvelous view and
the blue sea with the unique tropical vegetation. By boat,
you can visit the beaches of Paradisi, Lefka and Lianorogia.
Sightseeing's, of the area
The small church of Agia Paraskevi of the14th century,
with marvelous hagiographies and the healing spa of the
area, Palaiofournos.
Then, we come across the village of Simotata with the Monastery
of Panagia of Sision, in which the monk and hagiographer
Gerasimos Kokkinos or Stroumpoylos, lived. For swimming
you can try to the beach of the village, with length 2.5
Km, combining the marvelous view, the bleu water and the
unique tropical vert. With boat you can go to the beaches
Paradisi, Lefka and Lianorogia.

Turning right, we come across the picturesque settlements of Valeriano,
Hionata, Thiramona and Mavrata, which stand inside a wild vegetation,
under the imposing mountain of Enos and are famous for their wine.
Crossing Mavrata, we come across the scenic fishing-village of Katelio
with its long sandy beach. This road leads to the village of Ratzakli
with its marvelous beach, which is the place for propagation of
the sea turtles, Careta-Careta. Then, we come across the village
of Skala, the southest village of the island, which was one of the
four ancient kingdoms of Prons. Today it is famous as one of the
most touristic centres of Kefallonia, with big streets, squares
and a pine forest that surrounds the village.
In the far end of the village, ruins of the Roman villa, of the
2nd century AD, with wonderful mosaic floors of the ancient artist
Kraterou, were found. Sightseeings of the area are, the ruins of
the Doric temple of Apollo of the 5th century BC, near the small
church of Agios Georgios, 2 km north from the center of the city;
and the cave of Sakkos in the homonymous area, between the temple
of Apollo and Skala, which was refuge for the prehistoric man. Outside
the village stands the picturesque, traditional settlement of Palaio
Horio, with water mills and a magic view to the Ionian Sea.
Returning to the central road and crossing the village of Atsoupades,
we come across the village of Markopoulo, where on August 6th-15th
appear the so called non-poisonous, holy "Snakes of Panagia", which
have a black mark, like a cross, on their head. This is a sign of
good fortune.

Then we come across
the villages of Kremmidi, Pastra and Ag.Georgios, in which,
to the northeast, there are ruins of the ancient town of
Pronnon. This road leads to Ag.Irini, to the picturesque
settlement of Tzanata and ends up to the villages of the
area of Pirgi.
One of these villages is Ag. Nikolaos. Right there, is the
lake of Avithos or Akoli. Their names show that the bottoms
of the lakes have not been found yet. It is believed that
this phenomenon is due to an underground river, which drifts
the depth measuring tools.

In the edge of the lake Akoli, a Mycenean grave of the13th century
was found. On the top of the mountain stands the historical Monastery
of Atrou, of the 13th century, with his imposing medieval quadrilateral
castle.
The road from Monastery leads to the central port of the island,
Poros, a touristic resort, which is connected by costal lines with
Killini in Peloponniso. A unique location which combines the mountain
and the sea in a magical harmony that attracts many visitors. Sightseeings
of the area are, the Cyclopean Walls in the area of Asprogeraka
and the Monastery of Panagia of Atrou.
You can swim in the beautiful breakwater, in the beach of Limenia
to the south and in the beach of Makria Petra to the north. Especially
in the summer time, the inhabitants, in collaboration with the community,
organize many interesting cultural events; one of these events is
the Festival of Philharmonic. In Poros it operates an intellectual
centre, in a traditional building, with exibitions of painting and
music nights.To the edge of the lake Akolis was found a Mycenae
Grave of 13th century and on the top of the mountain is located
the historical Monastery of Atrou of 13th century with his marvelous
medieval quadrilateral castle.
